Topic: Is the Elm Zigzag Sawfly or Other Pests a Threat to Our Forests?
Description: Forest pests can spread quickly, causing serious damage to trees and ecosystems. The elm zigzag sawfly, first detected in Illinois in 2024, is an invasive pest that defoliates elm trees with its distinctive zigzag feeding pattern. With rapid reproduction and no natural predators, it poses a growing concern.
Join Tricia Bethke, Forest Pest Outreach Coordinator, to learn how to identify this pest and others, understand its impact, and explore management and reporting strategies. Tricia will highlight current Illinois Invasive Species Council pest risk assessments. Stay informed and help protect our forests!
