IAA 2015 Summer Conference

Thursday, June 25

8:30–9:00 Registration Opens

9:00–10:00 “Chipper Training” – Representatives from Bandit, Mobark and Vermeer will cover topics from TCIA Chipper Operator Specialist training manual. Topics include: ANSI/OSHA require- ments, types of chippers, controls and safety devices, chipper inspection, hooking up and driving with a chipper, setting up a work area, running the chipper, chipper maintenance and using the chipper’s winch. There will be hands-on demonstrations on all three types of chippers. If you choose to become a TCIA Credentialed Chipper Specialist, books will be on hand to purchase.

1:00–2:00 “Long Term Repercussions of Bad Pruning Cuts” -Jake Meisbauer, The Morton Arboretum

Pruning is one of the most common activities preformed by arborists. While often beneficial, it is important to remember that each pruning cut is an injury that will always be a part of the tree. When done properly, trees are typically able to use natural defenses to minimize the impact of pruning cuts. Improper pruning however, can have long-lasting and detrimental consequences. This presentation will be a hands–on discussion and short walking tour showing some conse- quences of improper pruning.

8:00–9:30 “Tree Risk Assessment, Inspection, and Mitigation” -Mark Duntemann, Natural Path Urban Forestry Consultants; Don Roppolo, The Care of Trees

This session will focus on how private and public sector staff can develop a strategy for imple- menting reasonable assessment protocols. Mark will introduce some newer concepts in identify- ing risk thresholds. Mark and Don will discuss mitigation alternatives and conclude with a cabling demonstration and discussion on liability exposure.

11:00-12:00 “Walking Insect and Disease Tour” – Stephanie Adams, The Morton Arboretum and Diane Plewa, U of I Extension
A hands-on tour and demonstration of diagnostic tools you can use in the field.
