Forestry Technician 

Full-Time Position

Wage Range: $25.77 – $35.19

 SUMMARY 

The Forestry Technician performs work in forestry, land management and restoration, wildlife management, and other natural resource management functions. Conducts tree surveys, assessments, and inventories at selected sites. Performs tree removals, pruning, climbing, trimming, cabling and bracing, transplanting, and fertilization. Uses drawings and sketches to prepare sites for tree and brush clearing, transplanting, prairie seeding, and burning. Plants and transplants trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and prairie, and may perform grading and seeding. Applies herbicides and pesticides, and assists with prescribed burns as necessary to manage flora and fauna. Removes blockages from waterways. Assists with the District’s Wildlife Management program. Operates dump trucks, tree chipper, tractors, tree spade, stump grinder, seeder, tree planter, chain saw, brush hog, aerial lift truck and other resource management equipment. Performs tasks that will require walking, bending, stooping, standing, kneeling, climbing, reaching and sitting. Performs heavy lifting tasks up to 75 pounds. 

 EXPERIENCE 

Associate’s degree and/or a certificate in Urban Forestry, Horticulture, Natural Resource Management, Biology, or related field from a junior college or vocational school. Three years’ experience in forestry, arboriculture, park or resource management. Knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of professional tree care, aerial pruning, hazardous tree removal, cabling, chipping, and stump removal. Working knowledge of methods, practices, tools, and materials used, and the ability to operate the necessary equipment in natural resource management. Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions pertaining to natural resource management. Must possess an Illinois Pesticide Operators license. Must possess a valid “CDL” Class A driver’s license.
