Public Services Laborer/Operator

Public Works Department – Full-Time

This position is responsible for performing a variety of tasks to primarily support the forestry crew.  Skills and experience operating a bucket truck to conduct tree trimming activities is essential.  This position will also perform tasks to support the construction, maintenance, and repair of City’s Public Works facilities. This position will also operate light-to-heavy duty construction equipment and perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks, including but not limited to, the construction, maintenance, and repair of City’s Public Works facilities. A laborer/operator operates a wide variety of equipment, including, but not limited to, bucket truck, backhoe, end loader, stump grinder, skid steer, chippers, aerial lift and other equipment. This position will perform work to repair curbing and sidewalks, maintain and inspect and repair storm sewer collection system, perform forestry and landscape duties, set up and clean-up of special events, and handle miscellaneous custodial duties and carpentry work. This position may be asked to perform the duties of the Maintenance Technician or Sign Technician.

In addition, the laborer/operator responds to emergency situations, such as snow removal, sanitary sewer backups, flooding from rain events, emergency utility locations, signs down etc. and support other City departments/divisions in the abatement of emergency situations. This position may oversee the work of employees and the completion of projects or may be asked to become Acting Crew Leader when the need arises. 

Requirements

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 2 years of experience in Public Works, construction, or forestry with an arborist certification preferred. Effective interpersonal and communication skills for interaction with co-workers and the public are required. Applicants must have strong equipment operation ability and experience, be able to work under varying environmental conditions, and lift up to 75 pounds. Strong fundamental math skills are also required. In addition, applicants must be willing to be on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (reporting no later than 60 minutes of the call-in) and possess a valid class A CDL with appropriate endorsements or acquire one within 6 months of hire.

If selected, successful completion of a background investigation, physical, functional capacity evaluation and drug screen are required. If applicants are current CDL holders, they will be run through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Clearinghouse pre-employment.   

Salary

Starting pay will be $29.43 per the Teamster’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.
