Wetland Scientist

Planning Resources is seeking an experienced Wetland Scientist. PRI is a widely recognized interdisciplinary landscape architecture and environmental consulting firm in Chicago’s west suburbs providing services to public and private clients since 1983. We specialize in ecological services and natural resource management throughout the Midwest.


  • Candidate must have a strong background in wetland delineation, state and federal permitting, and environmental planning. Responsibilities would include but are not limited to, conducting wetland delineations, regulatory permitting, wildlife habitat evaluation, endangered species surveys, impact assessment and mitigation planning, restoration or mitigation site monitoring, report preparation and interactions with state and federal agencies.
  • Certified Arborist Preferred.  Experience with tree surveys and forest management.


  • A bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, wetland science, botany, or other related environmental science, with 3-5 years of professional experience working within the regulatory framework of Midwest and local governments.
  • Certifications are a plus as a Professional Wetlands Scientist (PWS), Certified Erosion Control Specialist (CPESC), Illinois County Certified Wetland, Soil Scientist or Arborist.


  • Wetland delineation, functional assessments, wildlife habitat evaluations, endangered species surveys
  • Working knowledge of related relevant local, state, and federal regulations including, specifically focused on Illinois.
  • Section 404/401 Clean Water Act document and permit application preparation
  • Report preparation, photographic, documentation and field data collection
  • Design reviews and construction monitoring for implementation of permit conditions and environmental commitments
  • Project management, including preparation of local, state and federal permit applications
  • Strong plant identification skills
  • Experience using GIS software and GPS units
  • Excellent writing, verbal communication, and computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe-Pro).
  • Must be able to work independently and be able to conduct fieldwork under sometimes physically challenging and inclement weather conditions
  • Ability to resolve problems, and ensure tasks are completed in an efficient manner
  • Ability to work as part of a team with staff and communicate effectively with staff and clients
  • Knowledge of NE Illinois flora, fauna and natural systems.
