The Village of Downers Grove is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Maintenance Worker I in the Public Works Department. This position performs skilled and unskilled labor tasks, typically as a member of a work crew. Maintains Village parkway trees, water mains, roads, storm sewers, traffic control facilities, grounds, buildings and equipment. Provides customer service.

Job Duties:

  • Maintains a variety of public infrastructure including roadways, sidewalks, traffic signage and traffic control, forestry, stormwater and drinking water systems;
  • Operates and uses of a variety of power-driven and heavy construction tools and equipment;
  • Performs snow removal and carries out assigned tasks for emergency response and special events;
  • Demonstrates and promotes safe work practices, including safety procedures for operating power and heavy construction equipment, working in traffic, confined spaces, open trenches and other hazardous conditions;
  • Follows instruction from assigned crew leader;
  • Communicates effectively to customers, staff and supervisors;
  • Responds to off-hour scheduling and unscheduled work assignments.


  • High school diploma or GED. Training in OSHA construction safety and health standards desired;
  • Possession of a valid Illinois class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake endorsement within six months of hire. The successful candidate must pass a criminal/driving history background check and drug-screen; and,
  • When assigned to Forestry, possession of an Illinois Pesticide Operator License within six months of hire.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal instructions and perform manual labor; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Must be available to work weekend and evening hours as required. This is a bargaining unit position in the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150, Public Employees Division. Starting wages for this position are $45,604 per year, increasing to $65,148 after six years, with benefits. E.O.E.
