Natural Areas and Arbor Specialist – Full Time

The Natural Areas and Arbor Specialist oversees and participates in the maintenance of all the District’s natural areas, trees, shrubs, trails, and arboriculture responsibilities. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to: monitoring tree health, nursery management, tree planting, and stump grinding. The Candidate will have a thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, equipment and materials used in the maintenance of District tree inventories and natural areas. The Candidate will take the lead in the management of the removal of dead and diseased trees, and the trimming of trees for health reasons, as well as providing leadership, guidance, and technical support to other staff members. Candidate will be required to supervise full-time and part-time staff.

Other Responsibilities:

  • The coordination and participation of controlled burns
  • Removal of invasive weed and plant species, including the use of pesticides
  • Significant involvement in the District’s trail maintenance
  • Ability to maintain a safe environment while performing tasks
  • Responsible for the safe training of assigned staff
  • Participates in the District’s snow removal and ice rink maintenance scheduling
  • Participates in the management of Oswegoland Park District special events

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field of Park and Resource Management, Urban Forestry, or Arboriculture.  Work experience will be considered in the absence of a degree.
  • Current ISA Certification through the Illinois Arborist Association
  • Ability to safely operate District equipment, including trucks, wood chipper, snow plows, tractors, and power hand tools
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written
  • Be able to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Illinois State Pesticide Operator’s license
  • Possess a Valid Illinois State driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain and maintain S130 Fire Fighting and S-190 Fire Behavior certifications
  • General construction knowledge is preferred
  • Maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid Certifications
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Understand and exhibit behavior consistent with the stated values of the Oswegoland Park District

This position is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7 am to 3:30 pm. Some evenings and weekends will be required based upon the District’s operation schedule.

Salary range: $47,250 – $66,150 Annually
