The Maintenance Worker performs maintenance including inspection, pruning, removal, and planting trees to trees throughout the City. Specific work assignments are provided on a daily basis and may be rotated. Work includes the operation of motorized equipment and the expenditure of heavy physical labor. A Maintenance Worker may be assigned to lead a crew.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Safely and effectively perform department operations
  • Assess and maintain structural integrity of trees by various methods, including climbing with rope and saddle
  • Trim small trees from the ground
  • Assist with the removal of trees using ropes and rigging equipment
  • Operate brush chipper, stump grinder and spray unit
  • Haul wood and chips to disposal yards for recycling
  • Water and care for newly planted trees
  • Perform ground operations during removals and pruning
  • Deliver wood chips to City residents
  • Hang banners and seasonal decorations as directed
  • Operate a wide variety of equipment and vehicles of various classifications including dump trucks, tractors, loaders, pumps, backhoe, aerial lift truck (height of 65 ft.) 
  • Operate various hand and power tools, including chain saws, jack hammer, pole saws
  • Prepare winter salt mixtures and drive a dump truck with snow plow and spreader in performing snow and ice control duties 
  • Respond to 24-hour emergency call-back

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience:  High school diploma or equivalent and general computer skills required.A minimum of two years work experience in tree operations, including rope and saddle climbing, familiarity with ANSI Z133 Safety Requirements, and working knowledge of GIS systems preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:  Valid Illinois Driver’s License required. Must acquire a valid Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with related endorsements within 90 days of hire.Possession of a Flagger’s Certification may be required.Possession of a Forklift Certification may be required.  

SALARY:Starting pay rate is $21.54 per hour.
