The Village of Homewood seeks a Supervisor for the Landscape & Maintenance Division of Public Works. Field Supervisor
Public Works Landscape Maintenance $74,351+, DOQ

Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Public Works. Supervises crews working with Village tree and landscape care, and manages landscape/maintenance division budget. Performs other duties as assigned.


  •   Provides maintenance, care and planting of all Village trees and landscaping. Supervises crew(s) while working in the field.
  •   Is able to perform basic and advanced functions of tree care as well as hazard tree assessment and mitigation.
  •   Administers and enforces Village and departmental work rules and labor contract provisions. Recommends development and refinement of, and trains personnel in the application of safety policies and practices.
  •   Evaluates performance of subordinates. Counsels subordinates. May issue and/or recommend disciplinary action as necessary. Participates in interviews with candidates for employment and promotion. Makes recommendations to the Assistant Director.
  •   Investigates and resolves or refers service requests and complaints.
  •   Oversees the maintenance and preparation of records and reports.
  •   Maintains records of divisional maintenance activities, including cost and

    man-hour data of daily work by crews

  •   Assists with preparation of and implements the annual budget for the Landscape & Maintenance Division.
  •   Performs duties of Maintenance Worker as needed.
  •   Manages snow removal from downtown sidewalks.


  1. Education

    Bachelors of Science preferred in environmental or equivalent field or the equivalent in years of supervising in the field.

  2. Experience

    Minimum of five years experience as a supervisor. Experience in the field of Horticulture and Landscape.

  3. Licensing/Registration/Certification
    •   Certified Arborist
    •   Pesticide Applicator License
    •   Valid Illinois commercial driver’s license Class A with air brake and tanker


  4. Judgment and Decision Making

     Seeks guidance and direction as necessary for performance of duties.
     Demonstrates good judgment in investigating problems.
    Respects the confidentiality department, resident, and personnel

    •   Performs all duties in an independent manner with little supervision.
    •   Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed although not

      directly assigned.

    •   Assists others as needed.
  6. Attendance and Reliability
    •   Does not abuse or take advantage of sick days off.
    •   Always provides proper, advanced notification of absences.
    •   Reports to work on time each day, after lunch and breaks, and does not

      leave early.

    •   May frequently respond to emergency calls and be available for on-call

      rotation. Attendance at occasional night meetings and some after hours

      work is required.

    •   In the event of an emergency, may be called in to perform needed tasks

      during the emergency event.

    •   Knowledge of general field and office procedures.
    •   Ability to work with minimal supervision.
    •   Ability to be responsive to the public in a professional, courteous and

      diplomatic manner.

    •   Ability to operate a wide variety of office machines including computers,

      calculators, copiers, telephones, and two-way radios.

    •   Ability to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, stoop, climb ladders, and work at other


    •   Ability to operate a wide range of equipment.
    •   Physical ability to lift heavy tools, implements, and materials.
    •   Ability to manage and allocate resources and supervise personnel as might

      normally be acquired through college or continuing education courses in

      management and supervision.

    •   Ability to maintain and establish a positive working relationship with fellow

      employees and the general public.

    •   Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner.
    •   Maintains a well-groomed, professional appearance appropriate for the

      position and situations.

    •   Work is performed in an office setting and outdoors in varying weather


    •   Work is performed in a low-stress environment.
    •   May be exposed to working in various hazardous conditions.
