NEMF Meeting – The Morton Arboretum

May 17, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Date: Thursday, May 17, 2018
Time: 10:00-12:00pm
Title: Remediating Compacted Urban Soils
Speaker:
Michelle Catania, Lead Research Assistant II for the Morton Arboretum Soil Science Lab
Summary: Michelle has worked under the direction of Dr. Bryant Scharenbroch for 6 years managing laboratory and field projects. Their focus was to study urban soils and their (in)ability to support urban trees. Soil compaction will likely stress trees. Therefore, compaction remediation in disturbed urban soil is vital for healthy urban forests. We examined above- and below-ground tree growth parameters and soil chemical, physical and biological properties at a compacted site to determine which commercially available soil amendments (water, mulch, compost, aerated compost tea, biological product and inorganic fertilizer) provided the best relief. Michelle is currently working under the direction of the Morton Arboretum Soil Ecologist, Dr. Meghan Midgley, examining biogeochemical cycling in forest soils.
Location:  The Morton Arboretum, 4100 Illinois Route 53, Lisle, IL 60532
Cost: $10 for Lunch.
Please RSVP: Email April Toney at april@illinoisarborist.org or call 877-617-8887.
