VILLAGE OF FLOSSMOOR FORESTRY MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN POSITION OPENING

The Village of Flossmoor is seeking a highly collaborative individual with strong interpersonal and public works operational skills for the position of Forestry Maintenance Technician.

General Responsibilities
This is a skilled position with responsibilities that include the operation of equipment related to pruning, trimming, maintenance, and removal of publicly owned trees, as well as maintenance of Village grounds. The Forestry Maintenance Technician will be responsible for “hands on” arboriculture and horticulture work, tree maintenance, inspection of contractual tree and landscape services, tree data collection, answering public inquiries, and tree insect and disease abatement. Other responsibilities include performing a variety of Public Works maintenance tasks which involves “hands on” repairs and maintenance of public facilities, including overtime when assigned or for emergencies.

Position Requirements
The successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment common to public works operations. Must have general knowledge in the areas of arboriculture and horticulture maintenance. Must be well organized and able to prioritize tasks as well as have the ability to efficiently and at times independently multi-task, managing multiple areas of responsibility with overlapping deadlines.

Five years of increasingly responsible public works (or equivalent) forestry experience required. Previous full- time public works arboriculture experience is preferred. High school diploma (or equivalent) required. ISA Certified Arborist credential within 1 year of hire. State of Illinois Pesticide Operator’s License within 1 year of hire. Illinois Class “A” CDL with tanker endorsement required within 6 months of hire. Must be available for emergency call-in duty on an overtime basis.

Salary:
Salary range is $59,235 – $74,043 DOQ with excellent benefits package.

General Description:

Job Duties:

Essential Functions:

· Coordinates all arboriculture and horticulture operational activities for maintenance of public trees and vegetation on Village owned properties with both contractual and in-house services.

  • Prepares bid specifications for the Village’s Parkway Tree Service Contract, Share- the-Cost Tree Program, and Landscape Maintenance Contract; monitors contracts, inspects work, processes payments; plans in-house arboriculture and horticulture work.
  • Assists senior management in arboriculture and horticulture maintenance annual budget preparation.
  • Performs annual tree survey.
  • Manages Village’s Share-The-Cost Tree Program.
  • Manages Village’s Tree Inventory Database.
  • Participate in after-hours call-in duty rotation – snow plowing and salting, water main breaks, sewer blocks, and other tasks as assigned.
  • Supervises and works with crews assigned to forestry activities and related work.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records as assigned.
  • Trains new and less qualified employees on procedures and equipment.
  • Responds to resident inquiries and complaints.
  • Provides technical advice to residents regarding forestry and horticulture related issues.
  • Maintains inventory of repair supplies and materials.
  • Performs vehicle and equipment checks.
  • Ensures compliance to all safety requirements during field operations.
  • Operates snow removal equipment.
  • Performs underground utility repairs.
  • Performs concrete and asphalt repairs.
  • Completes on-going training.
  • Performs semi-skilled and unskilled labor as required. Semi-skilled labor involves labor tasks that require minimal training to perform (i.e. raking asphalt). Unskilled labor involves tasks that require no training to perform (i.e. digging with a shovel).

Marginal Functions:

  • Triage priorities and emergencies in the absence of the Public Works Director and Assistant Public Works Director.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.Environmental Factors:

    The work environment includes the Public Works Service Center, Village Hall Complex, Wastewater Lift Stations, Public Water Pumping Stations, and the outdoors. Also included is office space at the Public Works Service Center with typical office equipment: a desk, phone and computer. The position is also required to make field visits to residential properties and commercial businesses to view resident and owner concerns.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Must be able to regularly walk to various areas at buildings, sites and the outdoors for daily functions.
    • Must be able to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
    • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
    • Must have vision abilities that include close vision, distance vision, depth and the ability to adjust focus.
    • Must be able to work at heights/depths of 50 feet above or below ground.Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions and to report to work when off- duty for overtime, whether work is assigned or an emergency call-in situation.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment common to public works operations.
