The Student Conservation Association is currently accepting applications for a CREW LEADER position for the CALUMET TREE CONSERVATION CORPS.

Crew Leader Duties: Supervise, transport, and mentor a team of three crew members, ages 18-25 for 36 weeks (Tues-Sat. 7 hrs/day) to plant and water 1,000 trees in the Grand Calumet watershed within the Indiana communities of East Chicago, Hammond, Gary, and Whiting. The Crew Leader will coordinate the daily work of the crew members, ensuring that work is done in a safe, timely, and effective manner. The Crew Leader will also be responsible for capturing project outcomes through photo documentation, data collection, reporting, and evaluations. Leaders will be expected to attend SCA provided trainings to ensure safe and effective tree canopy conservation as well as training in basic digital mapping and data collection techniques. The Leader will work closely with SCA and USDA Forest Service staff to recruit, develop, and support new and existing volunteers with a specific goal of increasing the number of individuals engaged in tree canopy stewardship in those communities. Crew members meet at a centralized pick-up and drop-off location (5400 Cline Ave. East Chicago, IN) and are transported to their work site each day by the Crew Leader in a work issued pickup truck.

Qualifications:

1. Must be 21 years or older.
2. Must have valid driver’s license for 3+ years and have clean driving record (trailer towing experience a plus)
3. Current ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
4. Current basic First Aid and CPR certifications, or ability to obtain before program start
5. Interest in learning about arboriculture and best tree planting practices
6. Able to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions and on difficult terrain while maintaining a positive attitude and setting an example for crew members.
7. Able to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
8. Ability to maintain safe, productive and enjoyable work environment and proven experience in successfully managing people.
9. Well-developed problem-solving, time management, organizational, and prioritizing skills.
10. Preference given to applicants that reside in or around Northwest Indiana.

Dates of Service:

Crew Leader Orientation/Training: March 25 – 29, 2019 (8 hrs a day, 40 hrs per week: Monday-Friday)
Program Dates for crew: April 2, 2019 – December 7, 2019 (7 hrs a day, 35 hrs per week: Tuesday-Saturday 7:00 AM to 2:30 PM for 36 weeks)*Crew leader receives an additional 5 hrs/week to complete administrative duties (putting them at 40 hrs/week)

Crew Leader Wrap Up/Reporting: December 9 – 13, 2019Salary: $15/hr for 38 weeks
